Sparks bounces back from first loss
The Railroaders rebounded from their first loss of the season on Friday with a 3-1 home win over Spring Creek on Saturday.
Sparks improved to 8-1, 3-1 in 3A North play.
“I’m pretty happy with how these guys bounced back from yesterdays’ loss,” Sparks coach Jose Espana said.
Junior Brandon Paz found the net twice in the win. He scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute (unassisted) and put back a rebound that deflected off the Spring Creek keeper two minutes into the second half, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Late in the first half, Eric Cervantes redirected a corner kick in front of the net and Mathew Garcia headed it home.
The Spartans scored their lone goal in the 74th minute on a penalty kick.
Sparks goes to Fallon on Wednesday.
Cougs win third straight
Spanish Springs won its third straight on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Damonte, 3-0, on the road.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-2-0, 3-2-0 in the 4A North. The Mustangs dropped to 5-4, 2-2.
Court Diesner put the guests on the board in the 29th minutes. That 1-0 scored held through the half. Nick Poynter scored a pair of insurance goals after the break in the 53rd and 62nd.
The Cougars will try to win their fourth straight on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Bishop Manogue.
Raiders come up short against defending state runners up
Reed played the defending state runners up tough on Saturday, but came up short, 2-0 at Wooster.
The Raiders dropped to 1-3-2, 1-3-1 in 4A North play. The Colts remained perfect, at 5-0, 4-0.
“(It was) a better game than the score line states,” first-year Reed coach Henry Menchaca said.
Reed goes to Galena on Wednesday afternoon. First touch is at 3:30 p.m.

Raiders snap skid
Hannah Anderson had a hat trick as Reed ended a two-game losing streak in convincing fashion on Saturday, winning 4-1 at Wooster.
The Raiders improved to 2-2-1, 2-2-1 with the rout.
Mikayla Farrow scored the Raiders’ only non-Anderson goal.
Reed goes to Galena on Tuesday afternoon.
Cougs get on the board
Spanish Springs picked up its first victory of the season on Saturday, winning 2-1 at Damonte Ranch.
The Cougars now sit at 1-3-1, 1-3-1 in 4A North play.
Spanish Springs will look for its second straight win on Tuesday afternoon at Bishop Manogue. First touch is at 3:30 p.m.
Sparks wins second straight
The Railroaders edged Sparing Creek, 2-1, at home on Saturday afternoon for their second straight win.
Sparks is now 4-4. 2-2 in the 3A North.
Devaney Lopez and Mileidy Cano scored both the Railroaders’ goals.
The Railroaders continue 3A play on Wednesday at home against Fallon.
