Early in the second quarter on Friday night in Fernley, Sparks found itself sitting on a 13-7 lead.
Whatever was holding the dam at that point, broke.
The Vaqueros scored a quick 26 points before going to the locker room and went on to roll, 46-20.
Sparks fell to 1-4, 1-4 in the 3A North with its third straight defeat. Fernley improved to 2-3, 2-3.
The Railroaders had their full arsenal of weapons for the first time this season. Week one starting quarterback/running back Nick Van Patten returned from a concussion, joining Hunter O’Meara in the backfield.
Fernley focused on the run game and held Sparks to 161 yards rushing. Van Patten finished with 62 yards on six carries. O’Meara ran for 59 yards on 18 touches.
Things get much tougher for the Railroaders next week. Sparks goes to undefeated Truckee.
