Spanish Springs has a lot of work to do if it’s going to win a third state title in five years.
The Cougars find themselves in fifth place after the first round of the state tournament on Monday at Eagle Valley in Carson, 62 strokes back of Coronado, which is eyeing its third straight state title.
Spanish Springs (379) leads only Green Valley (431) in the team competition. Coronado (317) also finds itself in front Bishop Gorman (333), Palo Verde (360) and Reno (361).
Emma Gilmore is tied for fourth overall after shooting an 8-over 80, leading the Cougs. She is followed by Jada McAlister (87), Katie Gilbertson (105) and Ciara Hornbarger (107).
Reed’s Kaitlin Fleiner qualified as in individual after finishing seventh in the 4A North regional tournament. She shot an 87 and sits in a tie for 18th.
Bishop Gorman’s Hunter Pate leads the overall tournament following a two-over 74.
The tournament concludes Tuesday at Eagle Valley.
