Raiders claim Varsity Elite Tourney

Reed overcame a sluggish first half to come back and beat Lowry, 51-40, at McQueen on Wednesday to claim the Varsity Elite Tournament title.

The Raiders (8-2, 3-1) trailed 21-13 at the break before taking over in the second half. The defending 3A North champion Buckaroos (10-2) suffered just their second defeat of the season.

Taylor Johnson led the Raiders with 16 points in the victory.

Reed jumps back into 4A North play on Tuesday night at Wooster. Tip is at 5:15 p.m.

Cougars win ninth consecutive

Spanish Springs longest winning streak in years swelled to nine games on Wednesday night with a 56-26 win over SECTA in the Las Vegas Winter Gator Classic.

The Cougars improved to 10-3 overall, remaining 4-0 in regional play.  They also beat Needles, 48-42, earlier in the day. The Roadrunners fell to 5-6.

The lead was just 15-11 after the first quarter, before the Cougs outscored the Roadrunners 21-5 in the second.

Now done with round robin play, Spanish Springs begins tournament play on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. against Lawndale (Lawndale, Calif.). The Cardinals are 3-4 this season.


Boys

Spanish Springs wears second straight L in San Diego

The Cougars wore their second consecutive close loss on Wednesday in San Diego’s Under Armour Classic.

Coach Kyle Penney’s team sunk to 7-4 with a 73-68 loss to Poway (Poway, Calif.). The Titans moved to 9-3.

The Cougs continue tournament play on Thursday against Bakersfield (Bakersfield, Calif.).

Yerington sneaks past Sparks in Nugget Rail City Classic

Sparks was on the wrong end of the scoreboard for the 10th time in just 11 contests this year, falling 60-55 to Yerington on Wednesday in the Nugget Rail City Classic.

The Lions, who play in the 2A North, improved to 8-4.

Matt Longland scored a team-high 21 points in the loss.

Sparks plays Hug at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Reed edged by North Valleys

The Raiders gave their High Desert League foe Panthers a fight on Wednesday in the Rail City Classic, but came up short, 59-54.

Reed fell to 2-9. North Valleys improved to 7-6.

Santa Teresa awaits the Raiders on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
