Sparks goes winless in Nugget Rail City Classic
The home court didn’t help the Railroaders this week.
Sparks (1-11) finished an 0-4 week at the Nugget Rail City Classic on Thursday morning with a 48-41 loss to Hug. The Hawks improved to 6-8.
Matt Longland was 4-of-7 from deep and led the Railroaders with 19 points. Vashisth Patel had eight and nobody else in Sparks uniform had more than five.
The Railroaders led 26-18 at the half, but were outscored 30-15 in the second half.
Sparks jumps back into 3A North play on Wednesday at Dayton (1-7, 0-3).
Raiders bested in tournament finale
Reed ended its stint in the Nugget Rail City Classic on Thursday with an 85-75 loss to Santa Teresa (San Jose, Calif.).
The Raiders (2-10, 1-3) dropped three of four contests in the tournament, with the lone win coming in the opener against Fernley. The Saints improved to 5-5.
Reed rejoins 4A North play on Tuesday night at Wooster (1-13, 0-4).
Spanish Springs picks up first win in San Diego
After dropping their first two contests of the Under Armour Classic in San Diego, the Cougs got past Bakersfield (Bakersfield, Calif.) on Thursday morning, 64-54.
Spanish Springs improved to 8-4 with the 10-point victory over the 6-10 Drillers.
Marcus Loadholt went off for 24 points. Freshman Mason Whittaker scored 13 on 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Josh Prizina hauled in 15 rebounds to go along with nine points.
The two teams were tied at 40-40 going to the fourth, where Spanish Springs outscored Bakersfield 24-14.
The Cougs wrap up their San Diego trip on Friday.

Cougs’ winning streak snapped
Spanish Springs’ longest winning streak in several seasons ended on Thursday with a 62-43 loss to Lawndale (Lawndale, Calif.) as part of the Gator Winter Classic in Las Vegas.
The Cougars dropped to 10-4 as the run of nine consecutive wins ended. The Cardinals improved to 4-4.
Now done with non-league play, Spanish Springs goes to Damonte Ranch on Tuesday. The Mustangs are 0-4 in 4A North play.
