The 4A North boys basketball regional tournament is one of the better local prep sporting events of the year. And it starts tonight.
Spanish Springs is the clear favorite, but Galena, Bishop Manogue, Carson, Reno and maybe even Douglas all present legitimate obstacles.

1. Spanish Springs Cougars (21-4, 16-0)
The Cougars are without a doubt the team to beat in the regional tournament.
They beat every 4A North team they played this year and have won their last 14.
Their depth and talent is unmatched. Spanish Springs is yet to win a regional title.

2. Galena Grizzlies (21-5, 13-3)
Dillon Voyles sat out last Tuesday’s home game against Douglas and it cost the Grizzlies an inconsequential loss.
Galena responded on Friday by scoring 93 points in a win over Damonte Ranch.

3. Bishop Manogue Miners (17-9, 12-4)
The Miners host Reed in the regional quarterfinals then potentially have a third meeting with Spanish Springs.
Bishop Manogue is the only 4A North team to beat the Cougs this year, although it was in a non-league game played at Bishop Manogue in December and Josh Prizina didn’t play.
The Miners have won six of their last seven.

4. Douglas Tigers (9-16, 8-8)
Where did this team come from?
Douglas has suddenly won four straight, including its last two at Galena and at home against Carson.

5. Carson Senators (11-12, 11-5)
With a home playoff game on the line, and a 32-16 halftime lead, the Senators were unable to get it done on Saturday evening at Douglas. They were outscored 22-7 in the fourth quarter.
Instead of opening the postseason at home against Reed, Carson instead travels to Reno tonight.
