Sparks City Council approved a plan on Monday that will allow up to $1.5 million from an already-in-place lodging tax to go towards the vacant Victorian Square Theater renovation.
Syufy Enterprises, which owns the building that houses the Victorian Square cinema, presented the proposal with intent to renovate and re-open the theater that shut down in September 2016.
Syufy has partnered with Galaxy to complete the renovation and re-opening. Galaxy already operates one theater in Sparks – the Galaxy IMAX Luxury + Theatre in the Legends shopping center.
“We are thrilled that Galaxy will have a second location in Sparks,” Sparks Mayor Geno Martini said. “The Sparks IMAX Luxury Theatre at the Outlets at Legends has been an overwhelming success for our city. We can’t wait to see the benefits Galaxy will bring to the Victorian Square Cinema as well.”
Syufy first filed the proposal in late 2016 to account for the final overhead needed in the estimated $7.6 million project. Additions to the theater will include luxury recliners, upgraded sound systems, renovations to the concessions area and lobby as well as state-of-the art digital projectors.
There currently is not a projected date for the re-opening of the theater previously ran by Cinemark.
