Galena posts four of six lowest rounds, leads field by 20 strokes
Galena is cruising after the first round of the 4A North regional tournament at Dayton Valley on Monday.
The Grizzlies carded a five-over 365 – 20 strokes better than Bishop Manogue. High Desert League champion Reno (389) sits in third in front of Spanish Springs (397), Reed (417), Carson (450), McQueen (451), Damonte Ranch (469) and North Valleys (502).
Four of the top six individual rounds were shot by Galena golfers. Presley Mackelburg and Scott Rescigno sit atop the leaderboard with a pair of one-under 71s. Connor Motherway and Jay Babu both shot 74s and are part of a four-way tie for third.
Spanish Springs’ Nick Frankoski is part of the crowd in third place. His round was the best of the day from a Cougar. He precedes Logan Cox (76), Austin Woods (80), Payne Avera (83), Chase Martin (84).
Brandon Forman fired the Raiders’ low round of the afternoon, a three-over 75. Cade Baker (80), Jimmy Harris (86), Evan Way (88) and Andrew Emerson (90) are following.
The tournament concludes Tuesday afternoon at Dayton Valley. The top two teams and the top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to state next Monday and Tuesday at Toiyabe Golf Club.
As it stands after day one, Spanish Springs’ Frankoski is first among golfers not from Galena or Bishop Manogue (the top two teams), Reed’s Forman is second, and Spanish Springs’ Cox is fourth.
