Galena and Elko both defeated Sparks on Saturday afternoon in the Howell Memorial Tournament played at the South Valley Sports Complex.
The Railroaders finished 0-4 in the tournament (three losses were to 4A schools) with a 5-0 loss to the Grizzlies and a 2-1 defeat to Elko. Sparks lost 5-1 to Coronado and 4-1 to Damonte Ranch on Friday.
“The whole weekend was great even though the scores did not reflect how the games were played,” Sparks coach Art Hurtado said. “Minor adjustments to the formation and personnel will bring a good season for us.”
Daniela Castorena scored Sparks’ lone goal of the day, against Elko.
The Railroaders continue non-league play on Friday night (5 p.m.) with their home opener against North Valleys. It will be their fourth game against 4A North competition.
Cougs split with Douglas, South Tahoe
Spanish Springs went 1-1 in its two games against Douglas and host South Tahoe on Saturday.
The Cougars (1-1-1) fell to the Tigers, 2-0, and rolled over the Vikings, 3-0.
Capri McMillan, Ashlee Pittard, and Cearse McMillan scored in the Cougs’ win over South Tahoe.
Spanish Springs will open 4A North play on Tuesday at Wooster.
