Girls Soccer: Spanish Springs, Reed pick up easy wins

September 5, 2017 By Nathan Shoup Leave a Comment

Spanish Springs fell in an early 2-0 hole to Carson in the first home game of the season on Tuesday night. The ball started going in the other net over the final 50 minutes.

The Cougars (3-1-1, 2-0-0) scored three times in the final 10 minutes of the half, and added five more goals out of the break to finish off a lopsided 8-2 win over the Senators (0-2-0, 0-2-0).

“As we were down 2-0, I thought we had dominated the game to that point and we were losing 2-0,” Spanish Springs coach Mike Faker said. “That’s not a situation you want to be in.”

Charlotte Moreland, Taylor Gunther and Coriana Mathews pulled the Cougs out of that situation with the three tallies before the half.

Moreland and Mathews both found the net again in the second half to finish with two goals apiece. Ashlee Pittard, Alyssa Marlow and Karigan McDonough also scored over the final 40 minutes.

Spanish Springs has now won its last three by an aggregate score of 17-2.

“Last year, we really struggled with finishing. We did everything else well, but that,” Faker said. “We’re still working on it. I don’t want to say the floodgates are open and we’re through … but yeah they did well.

“We had probably five goals that were good ones, really good ones.”

Spanish Springs will go to Douglas (5-0-0, 2-0-0) on Saturday afternoon looking for its fourth-straight win. It will already be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The Cougars dropped a 2-0 time-shortened non-league contest to the Tigers on Aug. 26 at South Tahoe.

“I thought we did well against them,” Faker said. “So, I think we should do well.”

Anderson involved in all four goals as Reed blanks Manogue

Reed picked up win No. 1 of the young season on Tuesday night at home, 4-0 over Bishop Manogue.

It may be more accurate to say Hannah Anderson picked up the win. The senior Player of the Year candidate scored once, and assisted on the three other goals as the Raiders moved to 1-1-0, 1-1-0.

The Miners sunk to 1-4-0, 1-1-0.

Anderson set up Lauryn Shipp in the 17th minute, Taylor Anderson in the 24th and scored herself in the 39th with an assist from Taylor Anderson.

Taylor Anderson (two goals and an assist) finished of a Hannah Anderson pass in the 66th minute for the final damage of the night.

Reed plays a non-league game at Sparks on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., then continues 4A North play on Saturday afternoon at Carson (0-2-0, 0-2-0).
