Galena’s Camryn Lummus (left) battles Spanish Springs senior Valison Espinosa for possession on Wednesday evening during the 4A girl’s regional playoffs. Galena went on to win 1-0 and advanced to the title game where they lost to McQueen.
The Cougs earned a shutout in their opening game of the 4A regional soccer tourney and defeated Damonte Ranch 2-0 to advance to the semifinals on Nov.1 where they met Galena.
The Grizzlies got the semifinal by knocking off Reed 3-1 and ending its season Oct. 30. Senior Ashlee Saville scored the lone goal for the Raiders on an assist from fellow senior Sydnee McGrath, but it wasn’t enough to stop Galena who had three goals from three players.
That set up a matchup of two teams that were at or near the top of their respective divisions all season in Spanish Springs and Galena. The Grizzlies scored a second-half goal and won the game 1-0 and advancing to the title game.
McQueen went on to upset undefeated Galena 1-0 in the regional championship on Saturday. Both teams advanced to this week’s state tournament.
