Reed’s chances of capturing a High Desert League title this season took a hit Friday after falling on the road to first place Reno, 21-3. It was the second straight year the Raiders struggled to move the ball on the Huskies field. Reed took its only conference loss to eventual league champion Reno last October, but got the last laugh after they eliminated them in the state semifinals four weeks later.
Much like the 39-0 regular season loss in 2017, the offense never got going for the visitors. Star running back Champ Robertson was held to just 13 yards on 10 carries and the Raiders threw three interceptions on a night when not much went right.
Aside from a second quarter 21-yard field goal from Aiden Sawyer, Reed was blanked on the scoreboard the rest of the night.
However, the game was still relatively tight at half as Reno held a slight 14-3 lead. The Huskies never put it away until Drue Worthen punched it in from three yards out against a tough Raider defense that held the home team in check most of the half.
Tyler Curry led Reed in total tackles with 15 and Robertson and Christian Richer each had 13. Angel Barboza and Ezra Belingheri recorded 10 apiece to give Reed five players with double-digit tackles.
Reed (5-3, 2-1) will get an extra week to think about the loss and game plan for its regular season finale Oct. 25 at home against rival Spanish Springs. They currently sit behind the Cougs and Huskies in third place by a half game.
Spanish Springs
The Cougs won their fourth straight game and are now 2-0 in conference play after shutting out Hug 35-0 on the road Friday night.
After both teams were blanked in the first quarter, Spanish Springs struck for three touchdowns in the second and two more in the third to put the game away early.
Tristan Szabo hooked up with his favorite receiver and threw both of his touchdown passes to Jordan Dudick, who led both teams in receiving with 137 yards. Jonny Lee took one to the house for the Cougs for a 55-yard touchdown run to lead the rushing unit.
Spanish Springs (5-3, 2-0) is set to host Reno (5-2, 2-0) in a first-place showdown Friday in a battle of undefeated HDL teams.
Sparks
It was another tough night for the Railroaders last Friday as they fell to Churchill County at home, 49-0. The loss was the fifth straight for Sparks.
The Railroaders (2-7, 2-6) finish out their season Friday at home against North Valleys at 7 p.m.
