The Spanish Springs boys soccer team continued to prove its season-long dominance on the pitch over the weekend when they captured the 4A Northern Region title on Saturday.
The top seeded Cougs defeated Galena 2-1 in the championship game after knocking off Wooster 2-1 in overtime Wednesday afternoon. They kicked off the tournament with a 3-0 win over Bishop Manogue in the quarterfinals Oct. 29.
After a season that saw them go 17-1 overall and 7-1 in league play, Spanish Springs has a first round bye in the state tournament this week and will play in the semifinals on Friday in Las Vegas a 4 p.m. They will take on either Coronado, Las Vegas, Durango or Eldorado. Galena advanced to the tournament and will play in the other side of the bracket on Thursday.
The state title game is set for Saturday at 10 a.m.
4A Girls
Reed and Spanish Springs both won and advanced out of the quarterfinals of the 4A Northern Regional girls soccer tournament last week but fell in the semifinals.
The Raiders defeated Damonte Ranch 1-0 last Tuesday before dropping a 2-0 match to Galena on Thursday while the Cougs knocked off Bishop Manogue 2-1 Tuesday and lost to Douglas 1-0 Thursday.
Galena beat Douglas 2-0 in the title game. Both teams advanced to the state tournament this week in Las Vegas.
3A Boys
The Sparks High boys soccer team dominated their way through the first two rounds of the 3A Northern Regional soccer playoffs but came up short in the title game.
Sparks blanked Yerington 8-0 in the quarterfinals on Thursday before taking down Fernley 7-1 the next day. The Railroaders fell to North Valleys 1-0 in the championship game but still advanced to the state tournament this week in Las Vegas.
They will take on Western from the South on Friday at 4 p.m. with the winner playing the winner of the North Valleys and Sunrise Mountain game Saturday in the state championship game at 10 a.m.
