Ron Smith, left, was sworn in as the 25th mayor of Sparks last Tuesday.
Mayor-elect Ron Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th mayor of the City of Sparks on November 13 at the Sparks Legislative Building.
Smith was elected to the city council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He has also served as Sparks mayor pro tempore since 2012.
“I am honored to have the great privilege of serving the people of Sparks,” Smith said. “I plan to continue the great work of my friend and mentor, mayor Geno Martini.” Mayor Martini will step down after serving the city for almost two decades, first as councilman and then mayor.
Smith, a strong advocate for transportation and infrastructure needs in the city, plans to champion continued growth, economic development and flood control.
Smith serves as chairman of the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, the Truckee Meadows Flood Management Authority, and the Sparks Tourism and Marketing Committee. In 2012, he received the Builders Association of Northern Nevada Public Official of the Year award. Ron and his wife Karen have been married for 39 years and have four children and nine grandchildren.
Council members Charlene Bybee and Ed Lawson were also sworn in for their second and third terms, respectively, and Sparks Municipal Judge James Spoo was sworn in for his third term.
Smith plans to fill his vacant Ward 3 council seat within 30 days of taking office.
