Sparks Tribune

You can take the man out of Reno. You cannot, apparently, take Reno out of the man.
When former Sparks Tribune Sports Editor Nathan Shoup, relocated to Las Vegas in September 2017, his departure for the Reno sports scene was not permanent.
Working with his younger brother, Adam, Nathan launched his podcast, The Reno Slant, in August and the show is already gaining significant traction. The show eclipsed 1,000 downloads in the first month has increased listenership month over month since.
“Even a year after I left the paper and my radio show, people were still reaching out on Twitter sharing they missed my show,” Nathan said. “So, Adam and I started kicking ideas around over the summer. We both love listening to podcasts, and creating a fun, authentic, and engaging show was something we were confident Nevada sports fans would appreciate.
“It’s up to us to keep that going by continuing to be as strategic as possible.”
The weekly podcast provides commentary on dominant Nevada storylines while analyzing past games, previewing upcoming contests, and bringing on relevant guests.
Guests on the show so far have included Nevada Athletic Director Doug Knuth, Nevada play-by-play man John Ramey, Chris Murray of Nevada Sports Net (twice), Aaron Torres of FOX Sports Radio, former Nevada play-by-play man Ryan Radtke (now with Westwood One), and Silver and Blue Outfitters owner Mark Glodowski.
“I think the response has been great,” Adam said. “We’ve really emphasized that this show is for the listeners in the Northern Nevada sports community and constantly trying to align our show with Reno’s interests … I was not expecting to have this type of response.”
New episodes are released every Thursday on the major platforms including iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, Google Play and iHeartRadio.
You can follow the show on Twitter and Instagram at @TheRenoSlant.
“Both guys are very knowledgeable and progressive on analyzing the games, teams, etc.,” one iTunes review reads. “(It’s) nice to finally have a pod just for the Pack and (to) have in-depth analysis, not just fluff pieces.”
