With just a week left in the boys high school basketball regular season, the race for first place in the High Desert League and the top spot in the upcoming regional tournament is coming down to Spanish Springs and Reed.
Both teams have continued their dominance of conference play and are just a half game apart in the standings, with the Cougars in first place after their win over Reed last month.
Spanish Springs picked up two more wins last week, starting Wednesday when they knocked off McQueen 63-36. Mason Whittaker scored a team-high 19 points and Leo Grass had 10 in a game that the Cougs outscored the Lancers 32-11 in the second half.
Eleven Spanish Springs players got into the scoring column on Friday during a 53-29 home win over Hug. Jesse Coats led the way with nine points.
Reed took care of Hug, 71-38, last Tuesday before winning on the road at Reno on Friday, 56-43.
The Raiders (20-3, 6-1) only have one game remaining on its schedule when they host Spanish Springs Friday night. The Cougs (20-3, 6-0) hosted Reno yesterday.
Girls
There’s a battle for the top spot in the High Desert League on the girls side as well that will come to a head during the final games of the regular season this week.
Spanish Springs is 17-6 overall and 5-1 in league play after winning 51-44 at McQueen last Wednesday and topping Hug 55-39 two days later.
The only team in their path is Reno (16-5, 5-1) who they faced yesterday. The Huskies handed the Cougs their only conference loss on Jan. 25.
The Cougs close out the season Friday against Reed. The Raiders are in third place in the HDL after beating Hug 83-57 last Tuesday and winning at Reno Friday, 56-36.
