Baseball season is officially underway in Northern Nevada after plenty of local prep teams took the diamond over the weekend.
It was a good start to the season for Spanish Springs as they won all five game they played as part of the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament.
The Cougs opened the year with a 12-1 win Thursday over West Valley out of California before beating University Prep, Calif. the next day, 3-1. After edging Carson 7-5 later in the day, they knocked off Colfax, Calif. on Saturday, 10-0. They ended the tourney with a 5-1 win over Reed the same day.
Despite the loss for the Raiders, they went 3-2 in the same tournament after beating University Prep 3-1 on Thursday and Laguna Creek, Calif. 4-3 on Friday. An 11-5 loss to Lassen ended the day before splitting Saturday with Douglas, 8-6, and Spanish Springs.
The Raiders dive into league play tomorrow at home against Bishop Manogue and play at Nevada Union Friday and at Douglas Saturday.
The Cougs play at Douglas tomorrow and at Reno Saturday to open league play.
Softball
Spanish Springs won three straight to open the season last week before falling in the final game of its tournament in Northern California.
The girls topped Vanden 10-2 and Bella Vista 9-0 on Friday and beat Oakmont 8-1 before losing to Madera 3-2 on Saturday.
The Cougs play at Reno tomorrow before playing two at McQueen Saturday.
Reed had a tough start to the year after finishing 1-4 in the Franklin High School Tournament in Northern California.
The Raiders lost to Oakdale 5-1 Friday before beating Righetti 2-1 the same day. They fell to Del Oro 4-0, Rialto 8-5 and Rodriguez 9-6 to finish the tourney.
They play at Bishop Manogue tomorrow and host Carson twice Saturday.
