One year after the Spanish Springs softball team captured its first state title, the girls are in a great position to repeat as champions.
The Cougs won their eighth and ninth straight games Saturday after beating Reed 6-1 and 11-1, and finished the season 17-3 in conference play to finish one game ahead of Bishop Manogue and Carson in the final regular season standings. Winning the conference title and capturing the No. 1 seed in the regional playoffs this week was the first step in the repeat goals for the Cougars.
The most impressive part of their run has the been the pitching. Spanish Springs pitchers have dominated opponents in the nine game streak and have held its opponents to just three total runs while winning six of those via the shutout.
The most recent performances was on Saturday when Tyra Clary shut down the Raiders in game one with seven strong innings of one-run ball while striking out six. Hailey Mclean did the same in game two and allowed one run on three hits and five strikeouts.
No. 1 Spanish Springs (17-3) will face off against No. 8 Reno (7-13) tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at Carson High and will play the winner of No. 4 McQueen (15-5) and No. 5 Douglas (14-6) the next day if they win.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Bishop Manogue (16-4) plays No. 7 Damonte Ranch (8-12) and No. 3 Carson (16-4) takes on No. 6 Reed (11-9) tomorrow. All games in the double-elimination tournament are at Carson High School.
The title game is set for Saturday at 12 p.m.
