Depot Gallery Opens in Sparks

July 17, 2019 By Sparks Tribune 1 Comment

On July 18, the public is invited to Victorian Square to celebrate all things art or Reimagined Art! All activities are centered around the theme of upcycling and using the imagination to create works of art.

The City of Sparks unveils its newest art gallery with its partner Sierra Arts in the heart of Victorian Square—The Depot Gallery, 831 Victorian Ave, next to the train display. Small and mighty, this “recycled” building is transformed into a pop-up gallery that will showcase the best in local and regional artists. The grand opening reception is from 4-9:00 p.m. and will showcase local artists’ work along with free refreshments.

The monthly event, 3rd Thursday, celebrates the magic of reimagined art, crafts, fashion and food. Makers and crafters show how they have purposefully created a new way to use, hear or view an item. Chef Sparky Walsh will demo how to avoid food waste and recreate those undesirable foods into works of art. Kidz zone will have creative up-cycle ideas to help turn household throwaways into functional art. Fashion tent and show will have you rethinking how you wear, reuse and buy apparel. The event runs from 4-9 p.m.

Part of 3rd Thursday, history is alive: Engine 8 Train, Glendale Schoolhouse and Sparks Museum are open late and free from 4-7 p.m.

Paddles and Pallettes exhibit features repurposed Dragon Boat paddles transformed into works of art by local artists, along with photography by Ty O’Neil from This is Reno. The project raises awareness of Immunize Nevada’s life-saving mission of promoting health and preventing disease, while celebrating the annual Northern Nevada International Dragon Boat Festival and the ancient Chinese sport of Dragon Boat racing. The artists reception is 4-9:00 p.m. in the Sparks Heritage Museum, at 814 Victorian Ave., downstairs gallery with free refreshments.

Inside the Sparks Museum’s Cultural Center, at 814 Victorian Ave., the Latimer Art Club presents “Yesterday, Today and Beyond.” The local long-standing art club’s show has pieces in all mediums including oils, acrylics, collages, watercolors and more. Meet a few of the artists from 5-7:30 p.m.

Parking is available in the City of Sparks parking garage next to the Theatre (enter on Victorian Plaza Circle by the plaza or 12th Street).

Hi, I have searched the internet and cannot find the hours of the gallery.

Is it open or only during special events?
