In a battle for first place between the only two unbeaten teams in High Desert League play, Spanish Springs defeated Reno on the road on Thursday, 28-0.
Riding a four-game win streak and looking to surprise the visiting team, Reno opted for an onside kick to start the game but the Cougs recovered and had great field position to start the game. They weren’t able to score on the opening drive, but took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a seven yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Tristan Szabo. Parker Luthy made it 14-0 with under a minute to play in the half with a short reception for the second score of the night for Spanish Springs.
Trey Hummel and Jackson Laduke scored in the third and fourth quarters, and the Cougar defense did the rest as they recorded their third shutout of the year in their biggest game of the season.
It was the sixth straight win for the Cougs who dropped their first three games on the schedule.
