SPARKS — Sparks fire officials are investigating a blaze that severely damaged three unoccupied buildings in a warehouse district near the Nugget hotel-casino where several of fires were started over the past 18 months by trespassers in abandoned structures.
No injuries were reported in the fire that broke out at the one-story buildings just after 9:15 a.m. Monday south of the hotel-casino near the railroad tracks, sending up a plume of black smoke.
Crews initially had to battle the blaze from a distance due to collapsing walls, but it was mostly under control by midday. It triggered power outages, but NV Energy reported power had been restored to all but about 350 customers by noon.
The city of Sparks filed nearly 20 notices of violations for dangerous conditions after similar fires broke out in the same area in April 2018.
