The 4A Northern football semifinals was supposed to feature two games on Friday, but the Reed and Damonte Ranch game was postponed until tonight due to health concerns over the whooping cough outbreak at Damonte.
Spanish Springs and Bishop Manogue still played its game as scheduled, and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately for the Cougs, they fell 49-42 and had their season ended in the process.
The Miners jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Cougars battled back in the second and cut the deficit to 28-21 at the half. The teams went on to trade scores before Spanish Springs ultimately came up short after a 14-point fourth quarter.
Manogue’s Zeke Lee led both teams with 231 rushing yards and three touchdowns. It was the first loss for the Cougs since Sept. 6. They had won nine straight games before Friday and finished the season at 9-4 overall.
The Miners will now face the winner of tonight’s game and have to game plan on short rest as the title game is now set for Monday at a site to be determined.
