D.C. MAYOR UPSET. The current practice of Texas Governor Abbot sending busloads of illegal immigrants to the nation’s capital has Mayor Bowser very upset. The rationale in Texas is that if President Biden continues to ignore the chaotic situation at the border, then a sample of what is happening should be brought to Biden’s doorstep in the hope that the president will finally do something about it.
Biden has a habit of taking issues he does not want to face and assigning them to his Vice President Harris. Speaking of the V.P., she has recently aligned herself with California Governor Newsom in soliciting funds from wealthy Democrat donors in preparation for a 2024 run.
So far, it is unclear who would be at the top of the ticket. The word in D.C. is that the Democrat party has pretty much written off Biden as its standard bearer in ‘24 and is scrambling for a potential list of candidates. With Biden’s controversial trip to the Mideast recently, his stock has continued to plummet. As one political observer put it, “Now we are beginning to understand why Biden was kept in the cellar for the majority of his Presidential Campaign.”
Lately, First Lady Jill has said that so many things popped up unexpectedly that Joe could not go forward with his agenda. What she did not mention was the fact that all of the problems facing Joe were of his own creation.
Other big news from D.C. was that AOC finds it hard to make ends meet on her salary of $174,000 dollars. She should talk to some of her constituents and find out how they survive on far less.
Unfortunately for President Biden, late last week he tested positive for Covid, causing many medical experts on T.V. to say that may be a reason for his rather erratic actions of late.
UNRELATED? Three news stories that broke lately may or may not have a connection. The first was that Barack Obama was constructing a large bunker at his northeast residence. The second was that the city of New York had released a PSA on T.V. telling residents what to do in case of a nuclear attack. The third was President Biden cautioning about the possibility of Iran getting a nuclear weapon.
CELEBRITY CORNER. Coming to television soon is a documentary called, “The Last Movie Stars”. It is a comprehensive story of Paul Newman and JoAnn Woodward, two of Hollywood’s top luminaries. The work is one that Newman commissioned a writer friend of his to put together. It will be shown on HBO Max.
I am always interested in anything pertaining to Newman’s career, as I had the pleasure of spending some time over drinks with him when he first came to Tinsel Town to star in “The Silver Chalice”. On that occasion we met at the apartment of a couple of fellow actors, Bob Patten and Warren Stevens.
Prior to Newman’s arrival, I asked Patten why Stevens looked so downhearted. He said that Newman was bringing his new girlfriend, Woodward, with him and that she had previously been Steven’s girlfriend.
When Newman arrived I didn’t think that this average sized individual would ever become one of the top stars in show business. In person, Newman was a pleasant chap and easy conversationalist. Because we both came from the East Coast, we had a lot to chat about. I recall him noting that his first big role in Hollywood had him appearing in a skirt, “With these skinny legs.”
Woodward was a good looking starlet at that time and subsequently became one of Hollywood’s top feminine stars. As I was leaving, Newman asked me if I knew of a cheap place to dine. I informed him there was a joint called “Steaks R Us” on La Cienega. That was the last time I saw Paul in person.
