Wilbur Elwin “Al” Curtis passed away at the age of 91 surrounded by loved ones on January 10, 2023 in Sparks, Nevada. Al was predeceased by Helen, his loving wife, of 61 years.
Al was born in Estacada, Oregon to Bert and Doris Curtis and attended high school in Winnemucca, Nevada. In 1950, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Shields DD-596 during the Korean War.

Once he completed his service, he moved to Ely, Nevada where he met and married Helen, the love of his life. Al and Helen raised five daughters in Ely: Yvonne (Tom) Rinaldi, Debra Butters (Russ (d), Jim Terry (d)), Barbara (Bert) Hartmann, Carol (Dan) Banghart, and Nancy (Bart) Williams.
Al owned and operated a variety of businesses in White Pine County including Al’s Trim Shop and Goshute Drilling. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed tinkering with projects ranging from building and flying a one-seater airplane to perfecting his bread baking skills. In addition, he became a master gardener and enjoyed working his mining claims. His daughters believed he could do or fix anything.
He was a long-standing member of the Benevolent and Patriotic Order of Elks in Ely where he forged lifelong friendships. Al loved his country and instilled in his family patriotism and respect for the flag. Those who knew him will remember his broad smile, sense of humor and quick wit. He often said that if he didn’t live to be 100, then he died a premature death.
Al is survived by his brother Raymond (Marylin) Curtis, five daughters, nine grandsons, 14 granddaughters, 22 great grandsons, 21 great granddaughters, and two great-great granddaughters.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Celebration of Life on Friday February 24th, 6 to 9 p.m. at The Resort at Red Hawk in Sparks, Nevada. Memorial contributions honoring Al can be made to the Salvation Army.
