Last week, the City of Sparks celebrated the completion of the new Northern Nevada Medical Center ER located off Oppio Ranch Parkway and Pyramid Way. Sparks City councilmembers, Mayor Ed Lawson, the city attorney, and NNMC staff all took part in the ribbon-cutting before touring the brightly lit, brand new interior.
NNMC’s new ER will be open 24/7 to accommodate a variety of urgent medical needs such as those who may suffer from broken bones, chest pain, asthma, flu, minor lacerations, allergic reactions, and other emergencies. Multiple treatment rooms are included in the center along with “fast-track” exam rooms designed to help triage mildly ill patients. Imaging services including x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and lab draws are also available. If a patient needs a higher level of care than what is available at the ER, then NNMC works with REMSA Health and/or other local emergency medical providers to transport patients to an appropriate care facility.

Northern Nevada Medical Center first broke ground on the 10,600-sq.-ft. freestanding ER facility in October 2021.
“The Sparks area is rapidly growing, and we want to ensure residents have access to convenient, high quality care,” said CEO of Northern Nevada Medical Center Helen Lidholm at the time of its groundbreaking. “The new facility will deliver care closer to home, and through board-certified physicians and skilled nursing staff we will treat patients similarly to that of a hospital emergency department.”
NNMC opened its first medical center on E. Prater Way with 124 beds about 40 years ago and has since continued to expand to meet the needs of the growing population in Sparks and Spanish Springs. It opened its second hospital, the Sierra Medical Center on Innovation Drive in Reno in March 2022. At the time, it was the first full-service hospital that opened in the region in nearly 100 years. Then it opened its first freestanding ER in northwest Reno in August of 2021, prompting the launch of its second ER in Spanish Springs.
“We have seen success at our first FED location and know the growing population in Sparks will welcome the new facility to their neighborhood,” NNMC ER Medical Director Dr. Travis Anderson stated in a press release. Northern Nevada Medical Group healthcare providers are dispersed throughout Reno, Fallon, Bishop, and Sparks, and patients also have access to a myriad of outpatient surgical services through Quail Surgical and Pain Management Center.
