The weather is finally expected to warm up this Mother’s Day weekend, and there is plenty to do in Sparks. Whether it’s strolling around the Sparks Marina, participating in a food drive, or celebrating your mom in a unique way, here are some ideas for how to get involved in the community:
Best Buddies Friendship Walk
May 13
Stroll along the Sparks Marina for a worthy cause this Saturday at 3pm to support those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. You’ll be making the world more welcoming by helping build one friendship and one life-changing connection at a time. For more information, visit https://www.bestbuddiesfriendshipwalk.org/.
“Stamp Out Hunger” with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada
May 13
In conjunction with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is asking the community to consider leaving non-perishable, non-expired food items out in a sturdy bag next to their mailboxes this Saturday to help the Northern Nevadans who face hunger. One in ten Northern Nevadans are food insecure, and mostly need: entrees (soups, chilis, et cetera); protein (tuna, chicken, beans); canned fruit and vegetables. Along with delivering your mail, letter carriers will collect the donations and deliver them to local food pantries where they will be redistributed to those in need. People can also donate directly to the virtual food drive where every dollar helps provide three meals. https://give.fbnn.org/event/fbnn2023/
School district meeting
May 15
Join the Washoe County School District meeting at Sparks Middle School on Monday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. where officials will discuss options about combining and/or rebuilding schools serving Traner, Sparks, and Dilworth middle school students. A few options being considered include building a new, larger middle school on one of the sites and merging two middle schools into the new building, and possibly doing that to the elementary schools in the area, too. There will also be a brief discussion about future improvements for Sparks High School. No final decisions will be made at this meeting, any potential changes for these schools would not take place before the 2027-28 school year, and there will be plenty more opportunities to weigh in on these conversations in coming months.
