The City of Sparks recently began a street rehabilitation project in a neighborhood in downtown Sparks on May 30 and the project is expected to be completed by fall of this year. Sierra Nevada Construction is completely reconstructing the roadways on Wright Way, 5th Street, 6th Street, 7th Street, and E Street east of Pyramid Way between Victorian Avenue and Prater Way. These roads will be repaved with brand new asphalt as well as the removal and replacement of deteriorating curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveway entrances.
City of Sparks Transportation Manager Amber Sosa says that all the streets within Sparks are judged on a PCI (Pavement Condition Index) 1-100 scale on a three-year cycle. These streets `ranked in the 20s-30s, prompting the need for rehabilitation. Anyone in Sparks can see how their street ranks on the PCI scale by visiting the City of Sparks website at cityofsparks.us.
“This is an older neighborhood and it’s likely that the life of the pavement has aged out,” says Sosa. The cost of the project is $2.5 million which is drawn from the City of Sparks redevelopment area budget. Projects like this go in front of the Sparks City Council on an annual basis and facilitated through outside contractors. This Street Rehabilitation Project was approved by the city council and Redevelopment Agency back in April.
The three-year cycle for evaluating Sparks’ roads is based on a nationwide standard, since it generally takes three years in all different weather conditions/seasons before the roads start to deteriorate.
Construction on the Street Rehabilitation Project will take place 7am-7pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. Parking on these streets is not allowed during the construction period and cars will be towed if parked there.
Sosa confirms that since this project is taking place in a residential area in a grid and not on a main road that detours on Pyramid Way, Prater, 4th Street, and Victorian Avenue are still available.
“If you come up on a closed street then please follow the detour or go up to an open street to get around,” she says.
