From now through mid-December, NV Energy and Q&D Construction will be replacing around 2,800 feet of natural gas lines in certain areas of Sparks. Affected homes and businesses in the area have been contacted by NV Energy about this project to coordinate any interruptions in their natural gas service.
NV Energy plans on working on replacing the natural gas mainline in the following Sparks’ zones:
- Sawyer Way between Nelson Way and 4th St.
- Richards Way between Pyramid Way and 4th St.
- Richards Pl between Richards Way to the alleyway behind the Sparks Christian Fellowship building
The work on replacing the gas line started on August 28 and is expected to continue until December 15. The work on Sawyer Way is expected to be done by the end of October.
Commuters can expect traffic control to be in place that will include lane shifts, detours, and road closures to through traffic within the work area. There are no anticipated traffic delays expected during time and ingress/egress into properties within the construction zone will be maintained throughout the project. These roadways will be closed during construction, but detour signage will be in place.
An NV Energy spokesperson confirmed that people will have access to their natural gas throughout most of the project duration and the only outages customers can expect will be a short time when a home’s service is tied over to the new natural gas main. Each customer will be notified when the outage occurs; NV Energy will coordinate those times with the homeowners that will be affected.
NV Energy said that the existing gas line is nearing the end of its life span, which is why it is being replaced. A gas main is designed to have a lifespan of approximately 70 years, and Excavation and Encroachment permits were obtained through the City of Sparks for this work.
At press time, the gas company did not comment on how this project is being funded.
