Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan is urging local businesses to contact his office and the Sparks Police Department Neighborhood Protection Unit (NPU) if they are experiencing retail theft. The request from City Attorney Duncan comes after last month’s launch of the “Back Our Businesses” initiative, a partnership between the Sparks City Attorney’s Office and the Sparks Police Department. The Sparks Police Department is reporting their NPU has arrested 35 people for theft related charges during retail theft operations. There have been 56 cases of petty larceny opened at the municipal court since December 1, 2023.
The request from City Attorney Duncan to contact his office is the next step of the “Back our Business” initiative to continue outreach to the hardest hit businesses and further deter retail theft. Both the Sparks City Attorney’s Office and Sparks Police Department remain committed to cracking down on the hardest hit stores in the City of Sparks.
“Since the launch of the ‘Back Our Businesses’ initiative, our focus has been to crack down on retail theft as reflected in the numerous arrests from the operations. To continue to move this initiative forward, I am urging local businesses to reach out to our office so we can speak about the option of increasing police presence in the hardest hit stores, discuss best practices for deterring theft, and be proactive in further reducing retail theft in our community,” said City Attorney Wes Duncan.
The “Back Our Business” Initiative focuses on coordinated plain clothes/undercover operations, targeted enforcement, surveillance and coordinated efforts with loss prevention in some of the hardest hit stores in the City of Sparks. After arrest, Sparks Police is working with the Sparks City Attorney’s Office to prosecute offenders who break the law. These operations will continue without notice to the public to protect businesses from retail theft.
“Our office has a zero-tolerance policy and those who would come into our community to blatantly steal will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said City Attorney Wes Duncan.
Local businesses in the City of Sparks should contact Chief Assistant City Attorney Nic Danna at 775-353-2324 or ndanna@cityofsparks.us to discuss with the City Attorney’s Office and the NPU about a site visit and the challenges their business is experiencing with retail theft.
