The Sparks City Attorney’s Office has announced that its prosecutor secured a conviction for Domestic Battery against Cory Boteler stemming from an incident that occurred on May 11, 2024.
On May 11, 2024, Sparks Police Department dispatched to a residence in Sparks, Nevada, on a report of a physical altercation between a husband and a wife. Dispatch was advised that BOTELER had placed his hands on his wife, and she had used pepper spray against him in self-defense.
The victim explained that she had finished her shift as a cocktail waitress when BOTELER called her and yelled at her, using profane language. Due to his behavior, the victim activated her cell phone video recording before entering her home. The victim indicated that as soon as she walked in the door, her 7-year-old son said, “Daddy said he’s going to beat you up.” Officers noted that this was corroborated by the video recording.
As an argument ensued, the victim reported that BOTELER grabbed a kitchen knife. When the victim asked him why he had a knife, BOTELER answered, “Why? Are you scared?” The victim then indicated that BOTELER began to stab the table, countertops, and a cutting board with the knife. This was corroborated on scene when officers observed significant damage consistent with stab marks from a knife.
The victim indicated that as she attempted to retreat to a room, BOTELER continued to yell at her before lunging at her. The victim warned Boteler that if he continued, she would use the pepper spray in self-defense and called her friends to come help. Despite this, BOTELER lunged at her again and wrapped his arms around her to take away her phone. As a result, the victim used the pepper spray in self-defense, exposing herself and two minor children to airborne particles of the pepper spray. The victim then proceeded to take the children onto the balcony to assist with the exposure to the pepper spray, leading to BOTELER departing the scene before police could arrive.
Officers attempted to contact BOTELER by telephone multiple times; however, the attempts were unsuccessful. Officers established probable cause to issue a warrant for arrest of BOTELER for Domestic Battery, resulting in his arrest on November 10, 2025.
On January 13, 2026, Senior Assistant City Attorney Ana Swanson represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery against the Defendant.
“The Sparks City Attorney’s Office will continue to hold offenders accountable, especially when they commit acts of violence in the presence of children,” said Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan.
As a result of the conviction, a Sparks Municipal Court Judge rendered the following sentence:
Mr. BOTELER will serve the maximum term of 180 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended not to exceed two years, on the conditions that he complete 2 active days in jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence classes, attend an 8 hour class on the effects of violence in the home, abstain from drugs and alcohol, obey all laws and have no contact with the victim except to discuss their child custody status.
