Nevada is Nevada and Texas is Texas. Always was; always will be. But in 2022 may I suggest a tiny link between the two states: The awakening of Hispanic voters. Consider Mayra Flores, who won a special election in the 34th Congressional District in Texas. In a traditionally Democratic stronghold, did she run on gender identity? Did she hit the stump telling people about the … [Read more...]
Fight back against white elephants
When there’s a fight, liberals cut and runTravus T. Hipp (1937- 2012) My Tribune colleague often said that in his hall of fame radio career and many times, he proved correct. I’ve lately seen a rash of obituaries for liberal democracy. A few examples: The egalitarian era from President Franklin Roosevelt to Lyndon Johnson was a one-time aberration. Reversing Roe v. Wade … [Read more...]
Ben Scott celebration
A large crowd of more than 200 persons attended the June 11th Celebration of Life for the late Ben Scott, which was held at the National Auto Museum in Reno. While Ben was most notable for his long tenure as the owner of Scott Motors, the celebration largely featured his love of flying. Among the many displays on hand were those that highlighted his aerial adventures. The … [Read more...]
Is this you? Magically learning
Learning is something I enjoy. I don’t shy away from learning to stuff new things into my gray matter, no way. But! Yes a cram packed “but.” I mean come on, by this time in my life you’d think I’d know all I need to know to get me through to the end of my times. Then something fun to learn will come up and my eyes get all glazed over, my ears perk up and my mouth leads the way … [Read more...]
Does a chicken cry?
Ever since newly minted Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson could not – or more accurately would not – answer the question “what is a woman” at her confirmation hearing, American political punditry remains at the ready to do battle over the topic. Don’t expect much of a fight in Nevada, though. This remains a pioneer state with fairly conservative values about … [Read more...]
Eagles, chickens & Treasongate turkeys
Media is the plural of mediocreJimmy Breslin To paraphrase Charles Barkley, you know the world is going to hell when FOX News deserves praise for (ZOUNDS!) carrying the congressional Treasongate hearings while PBS airs old news shows or kiddie cartoons. That’s what happened in this region last Thursday and Monday and will again today. Public Broadcasting System KNPB … [Read more...]
Bob Carroll passes
The most recognizable face and voice on TV and Radio in the Truckee Meadows disappeared when Bob Carroll passed away on June 6th. For me I was fortunate enough to meet Bob when he first came to Reno in the ‘50s and interfaced with him for more than sixty years in all types of media. Those events would probably fill several pages of this newspaper, but due to space limitations … [Read more...]
Is this you? Dreams of Scary Proportions
I pay attention as I drive. Seeing all the oddities. Crows eating something off the road that left an unmistakable vibrant slide of unmentionable parts and pieces, until the very last moment when they hop up out of the way of the cars speeding towards them with horns honking. Like a crow knows what a honking horn means. Sorry, stepped in something and slipped off the … [Read more...]
