Spanish Springs was outscored 26-12 in the third quarter after holding a narrow 30-28 halftime lead over Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.) and went on to fall 70-56 on Saturday in the Wild West Shootout.
The defeat gave the Cougs (2-2, 1-0) a fourth-place finish in the annual eight-team tournament at Bishop Manogue.
First-team all-league forward Josh Prizina missed his third straight game with a rolled ankle. He did not play in Thursday’ win over St. Mary’s or Friday’s loss against Bishop Manogue, but coach Kyle Penney said the injury is not believed to be serious.
It was the second straight game the Cougars were handled out of the locker room. Spanish Springs was outscored 42-21 on Saturday after being outscored 46-29 in the final two quarters against the Miners on Friday.
Bryce DeLong was 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep to lead the Cougars with 17 points. Marcus Loadholt had 13.
The Cougars now prepare for a pivotal early season 4A North matchup on Tuesday night at Carson, the reigning regional champ.
Sparks’ skid continues
The Railroaders’ season-opening losing streak reached four games on Saturday morning with a 54-46 home loss to Fallon.
It was Sparks’ final game in the annual Rail City Classic, also falling to Golden Valley (Merced, Calif.) and Vacaville (Vacaville, Calif.).
League play starts next Friday night at Spring Creek.
Reed finishes 0-3 in Elko
The Raiders ended their trip to Elko for the Red Lion Memorial on Saturday with an 80-47 loss to East High (Salt Lake City, Utah).
Reed dropped to 1-3, 1-0 with its third shorthanded loss in as many days. Several players did not make the trip to eastern Nevada due to testing, health and/or personal reasons.
The Raiders jump back into 4A North play on Tuesday night at Bishop Manogue.

Cougars split two
Spanish Springs ended its stay in the annual High Sierra Classic with a two-game split on Saturday. Both games were at Spanish Springs.
The Cougars (2-3, 1-0) lost to Fallon, 43-40, then turned around and beat Elko, 58-53.
Spanish Springs gets back into 4A North Tuesday night at Carson.
