Spanish Springs, Reed finish fourth and fifth respectively
The second and final day of the 4A North regional tournament at Dayton Valley was not as fruitful for the Cougs.
After shooting a team score of 397 on Monday and sitting just 12 shots back of second-place Bishop Manogue, Spanish Springs (397-418—815) carded a 418 on Tuesday and settled for a fourth-place finish. The Miners (385-376—761) pulled away for the region’s second and final state berth, turning in 376.
Galena (365-372—737) rolled the regional title, finishing 24 strokes ahead of Bishop Manogue. High Desert League champion Reno (389-399—788) finished third. Reed (419-406—825) was fifth, followed by McQueen (451-425—876), Damonte Ranch (469-446—915), and Carson (450-476—926).
Four of the top five scores were shot by Galena golfers.
Connor Motherway (74-67—141) won the individual regional title. Jay Babu (74-73—147) and Scott Rescigno (71-76—147) tied for third. Presley Mackelburg (71-77—148) took fifth.
Bishop Manogue’s Ollie Osborne (74-70—144) broke up the maul of Grizzlies at the top of the scoreboard with his second-place finish.
While Galena and Bishop Manogue punched their tickets to state with their first- and second-place finishes, the top five individuals not on either qualifying team also advanced to state.
The five spots went to Reno’s Jerimiah Hall (75-77—152, seventh overall), Reed’s Brandon Forman (75-78—153, eighth overall), Reno’s Lucas Colfer (77-78—155, tied for 10th overall), Reno’s Tommy Zumtobel (77-78—155, tied for 10th overall), and Spanish Springs’ Nick Frankoski (74-82—156, tied for 13th overall).
Reed’s Cade Baker (80-77—157, 15th overall) and Spanish Springs’ Austin Woods (80-78—158, 16th overall) barely missed out on extending their season an additional week.
Also for the Cougars, Logan Cox (76-90—166) finished in a tied for 23rd, Chase Martin (84-86—170) was 26th, Payne Avera (83-88—171) took 27th, and Pat Penrod (90-84—174) ended in a tie for 32nd.
For the Raiders, Jimmy Harris (86-86—172) finished in a four-way tie for 28th along with teammate Evan Way (88-84—172). Andrew Emerson (90-93—183) ended the tournament in 38th place.
State will be held next Monday at Tuesday at Toiyable Golf Club.
