The city of Sparks and NV Energy have began work to upgrade its natural gas service with the installation of an 18-inch steel natural gas main on Sparks Blvd.
Throughout the approximately 12-week project, NV Energy’s contractor for the project, Q & D Construction, will close the pedestrian/bike path that runs parallel to the North Truckee Drain. Detours will be in place.
Additionally, the southbound inside lane of Sparks Blvd. from south of Baring Blvd. to north of Prater Way will be closed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The timing of these closures will allow both lanes to be open during the important morning commute by residents of Sparks and Spanish Springs.
“As our community continues to grow, we regularly make upgrades to our system in order to meet the needs of the growing number of customers,” said Jesse Murray, NV Energy Vice President of Gas Delivery. “Installing this new, larger natural gas main will ensure that customers throughout the Reno-Sparks area will continue to have safe and reliable natural gas service. We apologize for the inconvenience this work may cause and are making every effort to minimize traffic disruptions to the area. ”
As the installation of the gas main progresses, the contractor will also close the intersection of Springland Drive/O’Callaghan Drive and Sparks Blvd. This closure will not occur until about two to four weeks into the project timeline and will require periodic lane closure in the northbound direction of Sparks Blvd. These closures will be timed to minimize disruption to area traffic.
Intermittent, complete closures on northbound Sparks Blvd. will also occur north of Prater Way, but will be conducted only during the overnight hours and detours will be posted.
The project scope also includes restoring the asphalt on the pedestrian/bike path, replacing trees and additional landscaping.
