The City of Sparks has received $1.5 million for rental assistance for elderly residents, people with disabilities and families and individuals facing unexpected emergencies.
The money, which came from a bill passed by the Nevada Legislature, is for the current fiscal year, with an additional $1.5 million in rental assistance expected for the next fiscal year.
The City has developed two programs for those facing hardships: the Eviction Prevention Rental Assistance Program and the Senior Short-Term Rental Assistance Program.
The Eviction Prevention Rental Assistance Program is designed to protect households facing eviction due to financial hardship or emergencies. The funds, awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, will be provided as a grant to eligible Sparks households. The assistance may cover past rent, including late fees, and future rent, not to exceed three months total.
“The City of Sparks is committed to using these important funds to help our residents stay in their homes,” said Mayor Ed Lawson. “We remain dedicated to supporting our community through this crucial initiative.”
The Senior Short-Term Rental Assistance Program offers seniors 62 years or older up to $500 per month for six months if they are unable to pay rent due to rent increases or financial hardships.
“We are hoping this funding will help seniors facing unexpected medical bills, rent increases, or other financial challenges,” said Mayor Lawson. “This money may give them time to stabilize their financial situation or potentially find a more affordable home to rent.”
For both programs, City staff will help residents complete their applications, and RHA will process the application and disburse the funds directly to landlords on behalf of eligible households. Detailed documentation supporting financial hardship or emergency, along with income eligibility, will be required.
To be eligible for rental assistance, households must:
- Earn at or below 80% of the current published United States Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Income Limits for Washoe County.
- Be a tenant in the City of Sparks with a current, active lease.
- Demonstrate financial hardship or emergency.
