In the Reno of yore, if you wanted to meet for coffee, enjoy lunch with friends or take the family out for dinner, which wouldn’t bust the budget, the choice was always the Gold ‘N’ Silver. This iconic restaurant, which opened in 1956, is located at 790 West 4th St. The reason it was in the news recently is that it was sold on February 3rd for the handsome price of $6.3 … [Read more...]
Plato’s Closet
In the mid-1960s, during one of my many trips south to our state’s capital, I attended the grand opening of the Carson Mall, Nevada’s first indoor climatecontrolled mall. Today, just a few blocks south of the Nevada State Capitol Complex, the Carson Mall is home to a new Plato’s Closet. Plato’s Closet, the leading teen and young adult retail resale concept, has announced the … [Read more...]
Breaking news
There was plenty to talk about at last week’s coffee klatch with the improbable 49ers reaching the NFC championship game; Russia’s threatening to invade Ukraine, Biden’s secretive movement of illegal immigrants all over the Country and the resignation of a Supreme Court Justice. Morning gatherings at coffee klatches are a good opportunity to get a diverse opinion on events … [Read more...]

Because of the fact that Novak refused to be … [Read more...]
Olympic memories

I will leave it up to the individual reader to assess Biden’s long list of accomplishments. It also is the date that marks less than 14 days to the start of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Reading about the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, caused me … [Read more...]
Incredible football game
In the most exciting professional football game this season, the 49ers defeated the LA Rams 27-24. By doing so, the 49ers assured themselves of a wildcard berth in the upcoming playoffs. Much of the credit goes to the 49er defense when they stepped up big time in the second half, but the most credit has to go to quarterback Garoppolo who scored the winning touchdown pass in the … [Read more...]
Boulevard of broken dreams
For many years there used to be a marvelous corridor that connected the cities of Sparks and Reno. It was called Fourth Street but it was actually old Highway 40, the only interstate here in the days prior to the freeway. This strip of road was home to a wide variety of businesses that included hotels, motels and commercial—both light and heavy—and an occasional bar and … [Read more...]
Odds and ends
The annual chore of cleaning out the files revealed a couple of items of interest this year. The first one is a decades old membership list of Reno’s venerable G.O.D. Club. Many of the names are of departed members, with a few still with us. The club was founded by Don Dondero and Bob Carroll after a conversation with Lee Frankovich about getting some old PR and Press … [Read more...]
